Kosi-ji....
Kosi-ji , as the people in Bihar call the Kosi River(Sorrow of Bihar), again struck them...Over 3 million people have lost their homes and loved ones as the angry waters of River Kosi inundated more than 16 districts of Bihar. Lots of discussions going on regarding whether it is because of the negligence in the part of authorities in repairing and maintaining the Kosi barrage in Nepal which was built in 1956, whether this tragedy could have been avoided, mails flowing depicting the hardships undergone by people there..The villagers are complaning about government not providing enough medical aid, food, and other basic amenities... these things everyone migt be reading everyday in newspapers.... This blog is not written for any discussion regarding what govt is doing for their welfare or whether authorities' negligence caused this...read on to know for what I have written this
I was not aware of the Kosi barrage or that the natural course of the river was altered by man-made structures and dams... I read some resident of Bihar telling that 'Isn't it natural that she(Kosi River) would one day take her normal course?'...True, On August 18, 2008, the Kosi river picked up an old channel it had abandoned over 100 years ago near the border with Nepal and India. Wt urged me to write this small piece of blog was the story about a girl born in flood...She was born 2 days back...her mom carried her thru the water till they reached a comparitively safe land and delivered her... and wt surprised me was that they are planning to name the girl as 'Kosika'... inspite of all the hardships they had to undergo due to the wrath of Kosi river, they wanted to name the girl on behalf of the river...the reason they are telling is 'Kosi-ji could have swept us away if she had wanted. She has given us a new life... It is not her mistake. Forces of nature go awry only when we human beings meddle with it...'. I cannot but admire the way those people are thinking... They lost their houses, their income, their loved ones,everything...still they are not blaming their Kosi-ji for anything, they are not cursing their fate...they are considering it as a new beginning... I dont know how many of them will be literate, how many have seen the world outside their village...but still they are having such a matured thought.. How many of us can think like that? I dont know whether I ll be able to... But after reading this I will defenitely try my best to...We are literate, we have seen the world beyond our town/city, we consider ourselves much above those who are not learned.. but still we are not able to hang on even when a small wind blows... recently i got a mail telling a techie committed suicide coz he was not able to handle the pressure of work... people are going to depressed state when their love life fails... and lot more..am not telling these are least important things in life but are these things bigger than life..? dont u think these are very small things wen compared to what the people i mentioned above are going through....? Next time wen u take a decision out of desperation, think abt this...then I am sure you will think twice before taking that next step in ur life..
Got this small piece of text from a site...
A villager's words who was a victim of the flood...
“Please write down my name, Sir, I had my wife, three children, six bighas of land, two buffalos and a pair of ox,”
“Now there is just me.”
